July 24 is celebrated as Pioneer Day. It was on that day in 1847 that the Mormon Pioneers, led by Brigham Young entered the Salt Lake Valley. Nine years later my great, great grandparents, James and Elisabeth Steele from Scotland joined and immigrated west with these early pioneers. They traveled by ship and train to reach Iowa where they signed up with the Martin Handcart Company to trek the remaining 1,300 miles to the Great Salt Lake Valley.

The Martin Handcart Company was the fifth handcart company to travel west to the Salt Lake Valley. This company of English emigrants left Iowa City, Iowa, on 28 July 1856. There were �576 [people], with 146 carts, 7 wagons, 30 oxen, and 50 cows and beef cattle� (LeRoy R. Hafen and Ann W. Hafen, Handcarts to Zion [1960], 93).
