Description
When you go to see the ruins of Pompeii you stand within the walls and streets that have been unearthed by archeologists. They were clever enough to pour plaster into some of the holes they found and discovered ghostly remains of people and animals who where buried beneath tons of ash from the eruptions of Mount Vesuvius. Their bodies had since decayed away. Grisly and horrifying as they are, you cant help but have empathy for the people who died so long ago, especially the innocent.
The plaster cast of this young child in fetal position with his hands to the face really moved me. Was he alone at that moment? Was he praying? What were his thoughts and feelings at that final moment? I cant imagine. How many others have died in similar circumstances and have never been found or known?
Whatever you believe about whether there is life after death this image makes me want to, at the very least, hope for a life after death for this seemingly innocent child who died in such a horrible way.
